good wednesday morning, everybody. we begin with new details about the women of the women at the center of the scandal involving david petraeus, paula broadwell. >> since word broke she was the other woman. and we're learning more about the background of tampa socialite, jill kelly. >> reporter: good morning. it has been days since the scandal started. new, it seems there's new twists every day. not just one, but two powerful men are enangtangled in all thi. the fbi and cia are expected to brief lawmakers on exactly what they know about the petraeus scandal today. as the search for answers continues, for the first time since news broke of her affair with general david petraeus, we see the woman at the center of it all, paula broadwell, eating

and drinking behind the closed doors of her brother's home in washington, d.c. this, as the scandal appears to widen and the spotlight shines on the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. >> the president thinks very highly of general allen and the service to his country. as well as the job he's done in afghanistan. >> reporter: a show of support at the white house. even as allen's nomination to be nato's commander. they are calling 20,000 to 30,000 e-mails. kelly is the woman who sparked the investigation into petraeus and broadwell. general allen said he did nothing wrong. >> i believe john allen until somebody proves otherwise. i believe he did nothing appropriate. >> reporter: while those involved in this case has been quiet. jill kelly tells tampa dispatchers she needs diplomatic

protection because she's honorary counsel to korea. >> they should not be able to cross my property. i don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved, as well. but now, because that's against the law to cross my walk since it's invilible. >> reporter: and lawmakers are demanding answers. when fbi officials brief them later this morning, they are expected to lay out how they handled this case and make it clear there were no politics involved. rob and paula? >> david petraeus still knows a lot about the benghazi attack. he was supposed to testify on thursday in front of the senate intelligence committee. will congress force him to testify? >> reporter: a lot of lawmakers are bringing up that issue, saying he needs to testify because he knows so much information about exactly what happened in benghazi. there are lots of calls about that. but we're unsure at this point what's going to happen. we know that the white house has

said that the acting cia director, who is supposed to take his place, is more than qualified to handle that situation. paula? >> all right. thank you, preeti. it is expected that president obama will be asked about the petraeus scandal during his news conference this afternoon, the first since his re-election. abc news will provide live coverage beginning at 1:30 this afternoon eastern time. and it is not over. another top general is in trouble for less than ethical conduct. william kip ward has been demoted after allegedly spending thousands of dollars on lavish travel and other unauthorized expen expenses. he is being forced to retire as a three-star general and pay back more than $80,000. >> not a banner week for our military. we're following a developing story overseas. a deadly explosion at a nato base in southern afghanistan. one soldier was killed in that blast tuesday. the cause of the explosion is

still unknown. but military officials say there's no indications of an enemy attack. the nationality of the soldier has not been released. house democratic leader, nancy pelosi, is promising an announcement this morning involving her political future. pelosi says she will reveal whether or not she will continue as minority leader, after the democrats failed to win enough seats last week to take back control of the house. and there are new questions about the political future of democrat jesse jackson jr., who easily won re-election to his illinois house seat last week. jackson has left the mayo clinic for the second time with no word where he's going or when he might be back to work. he has been on medical leave since june for treatment of bipolar disorder. a deadly plane crash is under investigation in jackson, mississippi. three people were onboard. they were killed when their single-engine piper slammed into a house tuesday night. the pilot reported an on-board emergency just after takeoff and radioed a request to return to

the airport. a mother and son were in the house. but they escaped without any serious injuries. and in new york, the head of the long island power authority is the latest casualty of superstorm sandy. michael hurby, the coo of lipa resigned tuesday. the utility is being heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastating storm. thousands of customers still without power. and hurricane sandy is dealing another blow to the people of new jersey in the form of higher taxes. governor chris christie says he may have no choice but to raise property taxes for rebuilding the heavily damaged state. christie has aggressively pushed for lower taxes since taking office. time, now, for a look at weather from across the country on this wednesday morning. we have showers and thunderstorms in the southeast, from macon, georgia, into jacksonville, orlando, and miami. a few inches of mountain snow in the northern rockies. morning showers from seattle to

there's more tarnish this morning on toyota's reputation for reliability. the japanese automaker is recalling almost 3 million cars worldwide because of steering and water pump problems. the two recalls cover more than a dozen models, including the prius. 1 million of the cars were sold here in the u.s. and just last month, toyota recalled more than 7 million vehicles for a different problem. there is more pressure on president obama this morning as he meets with business leaders about the nation's economy. the federal budget deficit last month was $120 billion, 22% more than a year ago. it's a sign the country is on track for its fifth-straight annual deficit of more than $1 trillion. the u.s. has not had a surplus since 2001. u.s. airways is reportedly pushing for a merger with american airlines. sources tell bloomberg news, the smaller airline presented a detailed plan to american's creditors yesterday. american would rather exit
